The Balance Sheet of Human Rights Violations in Prisons in Turkey – 2008

ISTANBUL | 26 – 10 – 2008 | According to the “Report on Prisons”, which has been prepared via examining the applications to the Headquarters and 29 Branches of the Human Rights Association (IHD) between 01 January and 30 September 2008 and scanning the press in Turkey, there are 2.110 violations in different categories and 26 people lost their lives in the prisons in Turkey during this period.

1 İbrahim Turan (35) 08.01.2008 E Type Close Prison in Mardin (he was killed while he was being beaten by other prisoners)
2 Hasan Eroğlu (60) 27.01.2008 No. 2 F Type Prison in Sincan (health problems)
3 N. Nejat Ağırbaş (35) 18.02.2008 L Type Prison in Antalya (he was found as dead in his dormitory)
4 Taner Çelik 20.02.2008 İnebolu Prison (it was alleged that he ended his life by hanging himself)
5 Osman Dönmez 22.03.2008 F Type Prison in Tekirdağ (he died in the hospital, where he was taken because of the heart attack)

7 Mehmet Hayır (68) 02.04.2008 Trabzon Bahçecik Prison (he died because of the heart attack)

9 Kuddusi Okkır 06.07.2008 F Type Prison in Tekirdağ (he lost his life after he had been evacuated because of the health problems)
10 Bülent Gülbay (40) 12.07.2008 M Type Close Prison in Ermenek, Karaman (suicide allegation)
11 Mehmet Sevil (49) 18.07.2008 Adana Kürkçüler Prison (he lost his life because of lung cancer)
12 Mehmet Ölçüm (44) 19.07.2008 L Type Close Prison in Alanya (it was alleged that he ended his life by hanging himself)
13 Aytekin Gümüşbaş (48) 24.07.2008 E Type Prison in Muğla (he lost his life in the hospital, where he was taken because he had become ill)
14 Yılmaz Özdemir (50) 25.07.2008 Fethiye Close Prison (he lost his life in the hospital, where he was taken because of heart attack)
15 Alaattin Balamaz (64) 25.07.2008 Adana Kürkçüler Prison (it was alleged that he lost life after he had fall down from stairs)
16 Ali Çekin (76) 29.07.2008 E Type Close Prison in Siirt (he lost his life in the hospital, where he was taken because of liver cancer)
17 Abdullah Ekinci (24) 02.08.2008 No. 1 F Type Prison in Tekirdağ (it was alleged that he committed suicide in the Bakirköy Hospital for Psychiatry and Neurology in Istanbul, where he was taken)
18 Şükrü Ege (44) 04.08.2008 F Type Prison in Kırıklar (he lost his life in the hospital, where he was taken because of heart attack)
19 Mustafa Leventcanlı (22) 07.08.2008 Open Prison in Adana (it was alleged that he ended his life by hanging himself in the bathroom)
20 Ahmet Siren 08.08.2008 M Type Prison in Bingöl (he was killed by shooting while he was entering to the health centre, where he was taken because of toothache)
21 Abdülaziz Ekinci 21.08.2008 Mardin Prison (it was alleged that he was killed while he was being beaten by guardians)
22 Murat Çömez 01.10.2008 Hasdal Military Prison (it was alleged that two privates lost their lives since they got poisoned from smog in the 23 Mecit Akkaya fire in the dormitory)
24 Duran Doğan (62) 02.10.2008 Metris Prison (he lost his life while he was getting treatment because of failures of lung, heart and kidney)
25 Hüseyin Şaşmaz 06.10.2008 H Type Prison in Gaziantep (it was alleged that he ended his life by hanging himself in the prayer room)
26 Engin Ceber 10.10.2008 Metris Prison (he lost his life in the hospital, where he was taken because of the torture he had been subjected to)
