We demand Mehmet Çömüt’s immediate release!

| 23 – 11 – 2008 | On October 24, the German police has arrested Mehmet Comut while he was on a family visit in Freiburg, Germany. His arrest follows a request by the Turkish authorities for his extradition.
Mr. Çömüt was a witness of the brutal prison massacre of the 19th December 2000, which was carried out by the TR state security forces against political prisoners in 20 prisons. Having survived the prison massacre operation, he participated in the hunger strike and death fast for more then 200 days, as a result of which he is suffering from the Wernicke Korsakoff syndrome. He is currently a political asylum seeker in France.

We demand from the regional high court in Karlsruhe and from the prosecutor, who are in charge and responsible for the decision of accepting the deportation demand by the Turkish Republic through Interpol, to immediately release Mr. Çömüt.

His deportation to the Turkish Republic would mean that he will get a life sentence in prison and will probably face new interrogation and torture by the police. As recent as a several weeks ago, Engin Ceber was killed while under arrest due to torture at the police station of the Turkish Republic. In order to prevent Mehmet Çömüt to go through the same inhuman treatment, we demand an immediate release and the right for him to return to France.
