Supportive action for the TEKEL workers in Ankara

ANKARA | 20 – 02 – 2010 | Thousands of people from all over the country, gathered today in Ankara to show their solidarity with the TEKEL workers that are on strike since more than three month. Today many people will demonstrate their solidarity and support for the workers legitimate struggle by staying inside tents, no one will go away.

Under the frame of the decision for this action taken by the Union Federations’ KESK, DISK, TÜRK-IS, KAMU SEN many labor and profession organisation representatives were also present. Only the trade unions Memur Sen and Hak-Is didn’t participate.

The demonstrators gathered at Sakarya square and chanted slogans like “The TEKEL workers are not alone”, “Long Live Our Struggle For Work, Bread and Freedom” etc. this demonstration was also supported by artists and actors like artist Tarik Akan and Rutkay Aziz who walked under the DiSK banner.

More than ten thousand people participated. Democratic mass organizations, progressive institutions and lawyer members of CHD- Contemporary Lawyers Association came with their ropes to express their support to the workers. The state forces have taken a lot of precautions; during the demonstration discussions between demonstrators and police occurred. The demonstration still continues.
