Roboski monument opened in Amed

roboski anitAMED | 30-12-2013 | A monument has been opened in the Kayapınar district of Amed province on Monday in memory of 34 Kurdish civilians killed by Turkish warplanes on 28 December 2011.

The Roboski monument in the Rojava Park has been built by the municipality. The monument which was sculpted by sculptor Suat Yakut is in the form of a seated woman symbolising the mothers of Roboski, with her arms held up to the sky, with the names of those killed and rockets from the war planes.

At the opening ceremony, in addition to the mothers of Roboski victims were the BDP’s Amed Mayoral candidates Gültan Kışanak and Fırat Anlı, the BDP’s provincial and district administrators, members of the Peace Mothers, Amed Human Rights Association President Raci Bilici, MEYA-DER President Leyla Ayaz, representatives of civil society organisations, Kayapınar Municipal workers and local people. The first speaker,  Kayapınar Mayor Mahmut Dağ, said that despite it being 2 years since the massacre those responsible had not been brought to justice, adding that the massacre had been deliberately covered up.

Amed Deputy Mayoral candidate Fırat Anlı said that they and the families of Roboski had kept the pain fresh in their hearts for 2 years, adding that the families had waged a persistent struggle for justice.

Anlı stressed that the process launched by Kurdish People’s Leader Abdullah Öcalan had demonstrated just one thing to them, that “everything is in our hands”, adding: “We are not waiting for anyone to do anything. Everything is in the hands, hearts and struggle of our people.” Anlı also mentioned Miran Encü, who died of a heart attack on the 2nd anniversary of the massacre.

After Anlı, Semira Encü, the mother of Selam Encü, who died in the massacre, spoke on behalf of the families of Roboski. “We Roboski mothers are not just the mothers of our own 34 martyrs, but also the mothers of all the martyrs of the Kurdish people. We are proud of our martyrs. They will brighten all four parts of Kurdistan. We want peace. Mothers have cried enough.”

Following the speeches the black cover on the monument was removed by Gültan Kışanak and the mothers of Roboski. As the monument was uncovered some of the mothers lifted their hands to the sky like the figure in the monument, crying laments.
