Police continue crackdown on demonstrators in Ankara and Hatay

police crackdownTURKEY | 12-09-2013 | Turkish police continue to use excessive force against demonstrators who are taking to the streets to protest the police violence that has claimed another life two days ago, of 22 year old Ahmet Atakan who lost his life during protests in the city.

Police attacked thousands of people who have gathered once again today in the Tuzluçayır neighborhood of Ankara’s Mamak district.

“Ahmet Atakan is immortal” and “Murderer police will be brought to book” are the slogans they are chanting while clashing with police who are using rubber bullets as well as pressure water and tear gas.

Clashes have become fiercer because of the excessive police force used against demonstrators and the reaction of local people effected by the brutal crackdown. Clashes are continuing on all streets of the neighborhood.

People in Hatay have also taken to the streets today to demand the disclosure and trial of those responsible for Atakan’s death. Police attack on demonstrators here is continuing since the funeral of the young boy yesterday afternoon.

Today’s police attack on demonstrators in Hatay came as they wanted to stage a march after remembering Atakan at the scene of his death in the Armutlu neighborhood. Police blocked the road and attacked demonstrators using pressure water and tear gas as they insisted on staging the march. The police crackdown has turned the city to a battlefield.

Demonstrators have closed main streets to traffic and put up barricades as clashes expanded to the whole neighborhood. A tear gas canister police fired has started fire in a house. Clashes are continuing. (ANF)
