Police brutalize protesters marching for Gezi victim

Protest at the Taksim Square in IstanbulISTANBUL | 09-09-2013 | Istanbul police have brutally attacked demonstrators who have gathered in Okmeydanı neighborhood today to form a human chain in solidarity with Berkin Elvan, a victim of excessive force police used during Gezi protests in June.

14 year old Berkin Elvan is in coma since June 16 when he was shot on the head by a gas capsule fired by police. The boy wasn’t even involved in the protests at that time, he was just passing by the area of clashes as he was going to the market to buy bread for a Sunday breakfast.

Police attacked the demonstrators as they wanted to march to the Istanbul Courthouse in Çağlayan to demand the disclosure and trial of those responsible for Berkin’s injury.

Clashes broke out in the area as protestors responded to the police with stones and molotov cocktails.

Ten people have been reported wounded and five people taken into custody, including three minors.

On August 21, Amnesty International issued a call to Turkish authorities to launch a fair investigation to determine the police officer responsible for firing the tear gas capsule that struck Elvan. (ANF)
