Nelson Mandela Dies at Age 95

MandelaSOUTH-AFRICA | 05-12-2013 | South African President Jacob Zuma confirmed Mandela’s death at a press conference on Thursday. The anti-apartheid leader passed away peacefully at his home in Johannesburg. Mandela had been critically ill with a lung infection for the past five months.

“We’ve lost our greatest son,” said Zuma.

Known to many around the world by his clan name, Madiba, Mandela was an inspiring figure in South Africa and abroad.

He was South Africa’s first black president and shared the 1993 Nobel Peace Price with former President Frederik Willem de Klerk; the foundation gave the duo the prize “for their work for the peaceful termination of the apartheid regime, and for laying the foundations for a new democratic South Africa.”
