Migrants Say No to GFMD – IAMR 3

MEXICO | 02 – 09 – 2010 |  The Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) will hold its 4th gathering in Mexico this November. It is taking place in the midst of the worst global economic and financial meltdown since the Great Depression of the 1930s and the escalating US-led war on terror. It is taking place in the midst of North American Free Trade Agreement’s (NAFTA) failure to fulfill its promise of providing a better life.

Currently the US is asserting its control and interest in the Latin American region – through strengthening of regional, sub-regional, and bilateral trade agreements, pursuing Bush-era military bases in the region, instigating and fanning armed conflicts within the region, militarizing and extending US borders in Latin America. There is a growing presence of progressive and anti-imperialist social movements and governments-in-power in Latin America, opposing neoliberal and hegemonic policies pursued by the US. Mexico is geopolitcally significant, sharing one of the worlds militarized borders with the US, the largest source of migrant labor in North America, a transit ground for all migrants coming from Central and South America, and a bailiwick for US-led militarization in the Latin American region.

Join us to expose the GFMD as a tool of imperialism to sell neoliberal and financing strategies and to expose and oppose US-led NAFTA and the militarization of borders in the region; We will mobilize the broadest posible force coming from the ranks of migrants and grassroots organizations, institutions and individuals in resisting GFMD and expand and strengthen the International Migrants Alliance as a militant international alliance to help develop more solidarity contacts, links and cooperative relations, especially from Latin American countries. We will also be documenting the ramifications of the militarization in Mexico with the US aid and complicity, especially how it affects the popular movements and the militarization of the US Mexican border.

Migrants Say No to GFMD!
Defend the rights of migrants and refugees against anti-migrant policies!

Development for the people not for corporate interests!

Create jobs, end roots of poverty!

Oppose militarization of borders in the region!

No to NAFTA, CAFTA and all anti-people trade agreements and policies!

Join us in Mexico City on November 6 to 10, 2010
