Favela Resistance in Rio de Janeiro

RIO DE JANEIRO | 09 – 01 – 14| In one oft he most biggest metropolis of Brasil in Rio de Janeiro in the northern part called Metro Mangueira, heavily clashes between police and the people oft he Favela (slum) have been going on.

The police brutally forces people to leave the slums because the state wants to build new bigger houses and for this reason they displace the poor people oft he favelas. More than hundred people have been injuredduring the resistance.

Due tot he preparations fort he World Football Champion Chip the state destroys the many slumsin order to build new housings, which are only for the rich. The government uses violence and brutality with no limit. The people are not silent against this aggression. Many actions are held in the center oft he city, also, many artists, and intellectuals participate and give support to the activities.

These activities find a great echo in the national mainstream media.  The state feels troubled by these actions since the preparations fort he upcoming Rio carnival are continuing. On Saturday January 11th a big rally is going to take place in the center oft he city.
